Model Talk : Gabrielle Rul

二年前友人のInstagramでガブリエルを見て、絶対彼女の写真撮りたいと思いました。 その頃、モデルではなかったのですが、彼女が特別だと感じました。その時、彼女にとって初めての撮影だったのに、写真に映った彼女のイメージに感動しました。 その後、ガブリエルがモデルを初め、すぐに人気モデルになり、Louis Vuitton, John Galliano, Paco Rabanne, Kenzoなどのショーに出る事になりました。 やっぱり普通のモデルとガブリエルは違います。Studio Bercotというパリのファッション学校を卒業し、今は素敵な刺繍をやっています。 彼女が私の為にTシャツにとても可愛いデザインの刺繍をしてくれました。刺繍のオーダーも受け付けているので、是非チェックしてください。

素直なモデルの生活についてポストしているので、彼女のInstagramはとても面白いです。 今回で2回目の来日ということで、彼女の日本についての印象と経験についてお聞きしました。

K : まず自己紹介からお願いします。

G : FranceのVersaillesから来ました。パリの近くの”Les Clayes-sous-bois”という森がたくさんある町です。その町が特に好きなわけではないのですが、両親と兄弟がそこに住んでいるので、よく帰ります。結構つまらないところですが、隣の森でよく遊んでいます。もっと賑やかな街の方が好きです。

K : どうやってモデルの仕事を始めたんですか？

G : 2016年の1月から始めました。以前にスカウトされましたが、学業を優先したかったので。2015年に勉強の為パリに引っ越して、ファッションインターンとして生活しようと思いましたが、ファッションで殆どのインターンシップで給料は貰えないので、数ヶ月間色んなバイトをしました。 その時にバイトじゃなくて、モデルをしてみようかなと思い、以前スカウトされた方に連絡しました。

K : 最も好きなデザイナーはだれですか？

G : Haider Ackermannは特に好きです。彼のポエトリーとロックなスタイルは感動します。 Haider Ackermannのショーにどうしても出たいんですけど、彼は背の高いモデルしか使わないと聞いて、私は小さい方なので無理かもしれません。

K : モデルじゃなかったら、何の仕事をしたいんですか？

G : ファッションデザイナーになりたいんです。

K : 東京の印象はどうでしょうか？

G : 賑やかで忙しい街です。皆んなあまり寝ない印象がしますが、便利で寝なくてもそんなに辛くはない気がします。いつもどこのお店も営業中ですし、とても清潔です。

K : 自分の経験の上で、他の国と比べて日本でのモデルの仕事はどうですか？

G : こっちの方が楽だと思います。オーディション会場まで運転して頂いて、マネージャーさんが全てを管理してくれます。例えばクライアントへの紹介とか。。。 しかし、殆どのチームが英語が話せないので、やはりコミニュケーションを取るの大変です。海外よりもっとたくさんの仕事を貰えるのですが、毎日早朝から仕事して、ちょっと疲れます。直ぐ慣れますけど。。

K : 一番面白かった撮影について教えて頂いてもいいですか？

G : ある夜、公園で撮影があって、凄くクレイジーでした。大きい椅子とフラッシュライトを運んだのに「こっそり」と何回も言われました。カメラマンがいつも「あなたは木を触って！！」と言われましたが、木がいっぱいでどの木がいいが分からなくて、いつも違う木を触ってたらしい。夜中で疲れていて、何も分からない状態で笑うか泣くかも分かりませんでした。

K : 最も驚いた日本の文化は何ですか？

G : 縦社会の厳しさに驚かされました。撮影の時、その堅い関係性を見て、日本人にとってそれがどんなに大切な事なのかわかりましたが、理解できません。

K : 日本の一番好きな場所はどこですか？

G : 寺と公園が好きです。賑やかな街なのに、その場所へ行くと落ち着きます。秘密のパラダイスの様です。 初めての温泉の経験は凄く面白かったです。石鹸を忘れてしまい、おばあちゃん達に手伝ってもらいました。可愛い可愛いとたくさん言われました。

K : 日本の一番好きな食べ物はなんですか？

G : 基本的に日本の食べ物はとても好きです。やっぱりお米の質はとても良いですね。大福、焼き芋と明太子は毎日位食べました。最初納豆は嫌いでしたが、慣れてきて今では毎朝食べています。面倒なので毎日料理はしたくないですが、毎日日本食を食べれたら嬉しいです。

K : 次はどこに行きますか？

G : パリにちょっと帰ります！

K : ガブちゃん、行ってらっしゃい。

I met Gabrielle around 2 years ago because I had seen her on a friend’s Instagram and wanted to take her picture. She wasn’t a model yet but I could tell there was something special about her look and personality. I really enjoy the shooting and the pictures, especially knowing it was one of her first shootings.

Now Gabrielle has made an amazing start as a model, being in major shows as Louis Vuitton, John Galliano, Paco Rabanne and Kenzo to name a few.

But Gabrielle is not your regular model, she actually graduated from the renown Parisian fashion school Studio Berçot and is making her own embroideries that are extremely stylish.
I am lucky enough that she did one for me, check them because she takes orders and can give your clothes this extra chic.

It is the second time she comes to Japan so I wanted to know what she thinks about Japanese culture and learn more about her experience here.

Can you tell us a bit more about you?

I’m from France, I was born in Versailles. But I grew up in a small town called Les Clayes-sous-Bois, not far from Paris. It was next to the forest. I’m not really attached to my hometown. I go back often because there’s still my parents and sibling living there and I love to go back to the forest but I don’t like the city in itself. It’s quite boring and I love buzzy cities.

when and how did you start modeling?

I started modeling in January 2016. I met a scout when I was younger but I wanted to focus on my studies first. After I moved to Paris to take an internship but couldn’t. Because in fashion internships are really low paid or not paid at all. So I took several jobs at a time for a few month then considered modeling again. I went back to see the scout and I signed a few weeks after.

Who is your favorite designer?

I love Haider Ackermann for the poetry and the rock n roll side of his collections. I would love to walk for Haider Ackermann, but I’ve been told he only works with tall models. Which I’m not.

If you weren’t modeling, what would you do?

Luckily I would work as a fashion designer!

What advice would you give to a model that is just starting?

Try not to take anything personally. And learn to be yourself before trying to become the person people will want you to be. Be on time, talk to everyone on the jobs and don’t take anything for granted.

What is your general impression of Tokyo?

It’s a really busy city. People never seem to sleep but the lifestyle makes it easy. Everything is always open and it’s really clean which is really appreciable.

What do you think about modeling in Japan compared to other countries?

In a way it’s easier because we are driven to the castings, the agencies guide us for everything. But it can be complicated when you’re working with a team who doesn’t speak a word of English. It’s also really exhausting because of the crazy call times. But it’s a good experience. As it’s my second time I find it easier now though. You get used to it after a while.

Can you tell us your favorite/funniest shooting experience?

I had a night shooting in a park this year and it was crazy. We were carrying a huge chair and big flash lights but they kept telling me we had to be discreet. I was laughing but also wanted to cry a bit at the same time because nothing was making sense and I was exhausted at the end of the shoot. The photographer kept telling me ‘Touch your tree ‘ but I was surrounded by trees and never seemed to touch the right one.

What aspect of Japanese culture surprised you the most?

The hierarchy. In every job, it feels like there’s a real order to respect and it’s really important for them to maintain that balance. I don’t always understand it.

What is your favorite place in Japan and why?

I love the big parks and the temple. You can find peace in the middle of the city. It’s like hidden paradises. You can breathe and take a breath from the city.
I will always remember my first sento. I forgot to bring a soap and only old Japanese ladies were there. They all gave me a soap and were constantly saying KAWAI KAWAI.
What is your favorite Japanese food?

There’s so many… The rice is excellent here, I can’t spend a day without eating daifukus, their sweet potatoes are to die for, the mentaiko has a huge place in my heart as well. At first, I hated natto but now I have it every day for breakfast. I could eat only Japanese if I wasn’t so lazy when it comes to cooking.

What is your next destination?

Coming back to Paris for a while.
